Tsunami Village Project Appeal
 |
The generosity of individuals, groups, schools, businesses and Corporations in the Isle of Wight and across the neighbouring Counties has raised nearly £300,000 to help victims of the Tsunami.
The first £25,000 was spent immediately to provide emergency accommodation and clean water using Rotary ShelterBoxes and AquaBoxes. The focus then turned to long term projects to rebuild the future.
The Village Project aims to help Tsunami survivors rebuild their lives. The objective is to restore their independence by helping them rebuild their homes, and repair or replace their fishing boats and nets. It is also hoped to offer assistance to a school and a hospital as well as promoting initiatives that help the community. |
A PARTNERSHIP IS BORN
A tight one-week fact finding mission to Sri Lanka, sponsored by D1110, concluded that the only effective way to achieve the project's vision was to work with and through the local Rotarians of RC Colombo.
The district selected was on the
East coast of
Sri Lanka. That exposed area had suffered the worst damage but had had the least aid because of logistical difficulties and the aftermath of 20 years civil war.
Rotarians from RC Whitfords (W Australia) were already working with RC Colombo and a tripartite Rotary partnership was born. We are also collaborating with the 'Rebuild Sri Lanka Trust', set up by a consortium of local business leaders who are dedicated to facilitating relief operations in the Island.
A new partnership has been set up with Rotary D1090 UK who have links with the RC Kalmunai where we plan to have school and hospital projects.

LATEST NEWS
The Village is completed
All the houses have now been occupied and the Bibby Meeting Hall is in full use.
Our Rotary Partners have been so effective that there is money left over for new Projects that benefit Tsunami Survivors. The first of these is Project Rainbow which aims to help the invisible victims of the Tsunami who have been denied much of the International Aid. The Rainbow Centre Sri Lanka works with the poorest and most disadvantaged children and through them reaches their families. These families live in the most primitive conditions and cannot secure permanent work as they have no papers. The casual work they depended on in the fishing and Tourist industries disappeared after the Tsunami. Many of the men became demoralised and sank into a vicious circle of heavy drinking, and abuse of their wives and children. The Rainbow Center has focussed its work on a community near Bentota and is beginning to give some of these families new hope.
Look at the Rainbow centre newsletter in the Project newsletter section of this website and also look at The Rainbow Centre's own website at www.rainbowcentresrilanka.com
We are also pursuing the possibility of another school computer project in the North, deep in the war zone. The Liz Earle Library Project at Kalmunai is still on hold awaiting completion of the new school classrooms.
Although the Tsunami Fund has now been closed the UK Steering Committee will continue its work until all the funds have been distributed. Newsletters will keep you informed. If you want to support any of the individual projects that have already been helped please contact Chairman Bill Wyke as detailed on this website.
More details can be found in our newsletters which are filed on this website. If you would like to be added to the Neqwsletter circulation list please contact the Editor, Rotarian Roger Esnault Email roger.esnault@which.net
